Social Media in the Classroom:
Creating Engaging and Collaborative
Learning Environments
An Action Research Project by Elo Antonyan
How do I improve student engagement and accountability

In the Summer of 2011, I began on a new journey in my life. I was accepted into Pepperdine University's Master of Arts in Learning Technologies program, and I was appointed Director of Administration and Outreach at the K-12 School I work at. These were two great paths I embarked on that I had perceived to be separate from one another. However, after I began my Action Research Project, I began to discover common threads between the two. My values, my ideas, my love for technology, and my desire to make a change began to merge into one path. What was the common factor between them? What tools do I use to get the job done?
What do I value? What do I think? What will I do next? All paths led to how I would make a change and make a difference.
The overall goal of my Action Research was to test if and how social media can play a role in the classroom to engage students, encourage collaboration, and create a higher level of accountability among students and their work.
